Chapter 14

The Lebenev pack started arriving after sunset, much like the night before. Food was set up inside, but tonight a large bonfire was built in the center of the work yard. The story-telling would take them outside as was traditional in Russia, Lebenev had told Benny. He just nodded — he’d told stories outside many nights last summer. A pile of pads for the storyteller to sit on, a bonfire, and appreciative listeners.

“I didn’t realize you were a Keeper of Stories when you visited here years ago,” Lebenev said.

“I was given stories by the Cambodian pack when I was a child and sent to safety during Pol Pot’s reign of terror,” Benny said. “The pack didn’t survive. I carried their stories for decades, knowing I was carrying their legacy. But I thought I had time, plenty of time, to take up that mantle. I was having too much fun.” He grinned at the old Alpha who snorted.

“But last summer, spending time with Ayta? I realized what a treasure I carry. And there are so few Keepers of Stories left. So now, we’re sharing stories, and we’ve started a school and a center to train a new generation of storytellers. I’ve become a teacher, Alpha,” he said, laughing a bit. “Who would have expected that?”

“Are you sure it’s wise?” Lebenev asked, but his eyes were focused on the entrance to the work yard from the street. “We keep to the old ways here.”

Benny stilled at the phrase. He started to say something, but then he turned to see what Lebenev was watching. He didn’t sense any apprehension from the Alpha, just... anticipation? A vintage red mustang was pulling in. Benny kept any expression off his face, but he knew that car. Hard to believe Alpha Lewis was still driving it, although classic car buffs would probably kill to have it.

“You didn’t mention that we would be having the Chairman of the Northwest Council joining us tonight,” Benny said neutrally. Did Jake know his father was going to be here? Probably not. Benny didn’t think they’d spoken in 50 years.

“Yes,” Lebenev said. “I believe Alpha Mendoza and some of his leadership will be joining us as well. I don’t think you realize how big an honor it is to have Alpha Ayta Vuk with us.”

Benny looked around for Carlos Mendoza whose father had declared him beta maybe just a decade ago. It didn’t look like he and the others were back from town yet. There were so many ways this could go bad. So very many ways. “I’ll find Ayta,” he murmured. “I’m sure she’ll want to greet Chairman Lewis.”

He walked back to the house where the women were setting out the food, and found Ayta, and explained rapidly what was happening. “If you could join them?” he suggested. “I need to call Carlos and give him a heads up or he’s going to come back here to see his father for the first time since he was banished. And I’d better call Jake too.
